Position Title: Sewing & Fiber Arts Instructor

Location: Mozaic Sewing Studio / Sterling, VA

Mozaic is a nonprofit organization supporting refugee and immigrant communities through education, empowerment, and skill-building. Our sewing and fiber arts programs aim to teach practical skills that help participants build confidence, find employment, or start small businesses.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a passionate and patient instructor with skills in sewing, embroidery, crocheting, or knitting to lead hands-on training sessions for refugee and immigrant women. You will teach basic to intermediate techniques, introduce related vocabulary in English (vocational language), ensure safety, and help students gain confidence in their craft. Proficiency in sewing and altering garments is especially important, as many students aim to gain practical skills for tailoring and small business opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan and teach small group classes (6–12 students) in one or more of the following: sewing, embroidery, crochet, or knitting
Create and adapt lesson plans based on skill level (beginners to intermediate)
Teach craft-related vocabulary in English to support language learning
Demonstrate techniques, supervise practice, and give feedback
Promote a welcoming, empowering, and culturally respectful environment
Track student progress and support their personal goals
Help prepare materials, maintain inventory, and set up class space
Encourage creativity and help students explore ways to monetize their skills

Preferred but Not Required

Qualifications:

Solid knowledge of tailoring, pattern-making, and textile arts
Proficient beside sewing in at least one of the following: embroidery, crocheting, or knitting
3–5 years of teaching experience in one or more of the above crafts
Experience teaching beginner and intermediate level students with diverse backgrounds
Ability to work with English learners and integrate vocabulary instruction
Warm, patient, and flexible teaching style
Culturally sensitive and committed to community development
