In a world buzzing with screens and fast-paced everything, a quiet revolution is happening — and it’s full of yarn, needles, and nostalgic charm.
“Grandma hobbies” like crocheting, knitting, embroidery, and sewing are making a huge comeback. But this time, it’s not just grandmas doing them — it’s teens and young adults who are picking up these age-old crafts and finding peace, creativity, and community in the process.
At Mozaic, we saw this firsthand earlier this year when we launched our very first Youth Crochet Circle. What started as a simple workshop turned into something so much more: a space for young girls to form bonds, express themselves, and slow down in a world that rarely lets them breathe.
Why Crochet?
Crochet isn’t just about making cozy scarves or trendy tote bags — it’s a therapeutic, confidence-building activity that teaches patience, focus, and creativity. Studies show that handcrafts like crocheting can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost self-esteem — especially for teens navigating the emotional rollercoaster of adolescence.
You can read more about this in this article from Parents.com, which beautifully explains why so-called “grandma hobbies” are exactly what today’s youth need.
A Youth-Led Circle with a Powerful Story
What makes Mozaic’s crochet class even more special is who leads it.
Our instructor is a refugee youth who came to the U.S. more than five years ago. Like many young people, she once struggled with confidence and belonging. But through the support of her peers and the trust placed in her, she stepped into leadership — first as a participant, now as the teacher. Watching her transformation from a quiet teen into a confident, goal-oriented young woman has been nothing short of inspiring.
She’s now sharing her skills and her story with other girls, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and growth.
A Space to Grow, Together
This May, we’re thrilled to bring the Crochet Circle back for another round of in-person sessions at the Mozaic Center. It’s open to girls ages 12 and up — whether they’re total beginners or have crocheted before.
In this circle, girls will:
- Learn a beautiful, useful craft
- Build friendships with other Muslim girls in a safe, supportive environment
- Gain confidence through creativity
- Witness leadership in action through a relatable peer
