Mozaic May 2026 Newsletter

Message from the Executive Director

Dear Mozaic community,
As we enter World Refugee Awareness Month, I am reminded that behind every refugee story is a story of courage, perseverance, and hope. This month, our newsletter highlights both the challenges facing displaced communities around the world and the remarkable achievements that are possible when refugees are welcomed, supported, and given opportunities to thrive.
At a time when many of the families we serve face growing uncertainty, Mozaic remains committed to providing safe spaces, practical skills, and pathways toward stability and belonging.
Throughout May, I had the privilege of witnessing the power of community in action. From mothers and daughters celebrating together at our Mother’s Day Tea Party, to refugee women learning new skills in our Sewing Studio and Quilting Class, to youth building friendships through Hooks & Books, every program reflected the spirit of belonging that Mozaic strives to cultivate. We also had the honor of sharing Syrian culture with thousands of visitors at Passport DC, showcasing the talents, traditions, and entrepreneurial spirit of the families we serve.
As we prepare to celebrate World Refugee Day later this month, I invite you to reflect on how each of us can play a role in building stronger, more compassionate communities. Whether you volunteer, donate, attend an event, or simply share our mission with others, your support makes these programs possible and helps refugee, immigrant, and underserved families build brighter futures.
On behalf of the entire Mozaic team, thank you for your continued partnership, generosity, and belief in the power of community. Together, we are creating spaces where individuals and families can heal, grow, and flourish.
With gratitude,

Raghad Bushnaq
Founder & Executive Director

The Mozaic Digest

This digest brings you the latest breaking news on U.S. and international policies affecting Syria and refugee populations, offering clear updates on the decisions shaping our community.

UNHCR Faces Major Funding Shortfall

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) announced further staff reductions and program cuts due to a significant decline in humanitarian funding. Aid organizations warn that reduced funding could impact access to food, healthcare, education, and protection services for millions of refugees worldwide.

Supreme Court Decision Looms on Syrians' Protected Status

A major U.S. Supreme Court case that could affect thousands of Syrians living in the United States under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) remains pending. The Court heard arguments earlier this spring, and a ruling is expected by late June or early July. The decision could determine whether Syrians currently protected from deportation and authorized to work in the U.S. can continue to remain legally in the country.

Remembering Dr. Rania al-Abbasi and Her Children

This May, Syrians around the world mourned the confirmation of a tragedy that has haunted the nation for more than 13 years.
Dr. Rania al-Abbasi, a respected dentist and chess champion, was arrested in March 2013 along with her six children—Dima, Intisar, Najah, Alaa, Ahmad, and Layan—just two days after her husband, Abdul Rahman al-Yassin, was detained by Syrian security forces. The family disappeared into the Assad regime’s detention system and was never seen again.
For years, loved ones and supporters held onto hope that some members of the family had survived. Recent confirmation of their deaths has reopened wounds across Syria and among the Syrian diaspora, serving as a painful reminder of the thousands of families affected by arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and political repression during the con
The story of the al-Abbasi family is especially heartbreaking because their ordeal reportedly began after they extended compassion and assistance to a displaced family in need.
As we remember Dr. Rania and her children, we honor their memory and all those whose lives were lost or forever changed by the Syrian conflict.

Mozaic Highlights

Celebrating Mothers, Daughters, and Community

This Mother’s Day, Mozaic partnered with Girl Scouts Troop 51091 to host a special tea party honoring refugee and immigrant mothers and their daughters. The event brought together 46 attendees for an afternoon filled with joy, creativity, and meaningful connection.

The celebration featured heartfelt speeches from daughters expressing their love and appreciation for their mothers, bouquet-making, crafts led by Girl Scout members, and delicious refreshments prepared by Girl Scout troop families. Mothers and daughters also enjoyed quality time together and received thoughtful gifts and gift cards to take home.

We are deeply grateful to the generous businesses and community members who helped make this event possible through their donations and sponsorships:

• The Baekehaus for delightful cake pops
• Olive Blossom VA for Karak Chai
• Yummies by Lala for a delicious pistachio rose bundt cake
• Sweet Siblings DMV for dessert cups
• Tulips & Turnips for Oliveda skincare samples

Their generosity helped create a memorable experience that celebrated the strength, love, and resilience of the mothers we serve.

A special thank you to Girl Scouts Troop 51091 for their compassion, leadership, and commitment to supporting refugee and immigrant families. Through their dedication and service, they helped create a day that our mothers and daughters will cherish for years to come.

Sharing Syrian Culture at Passport DC

On May 2, Mozaic participated in the Passport DC Bazar at the Islamic Center of Washington, welcoming an estimated 1,000–1,500 visitors from across the region. Led by staff member Sarah Charah and a dedicated team of volunteers, Mozaic showcased the rich flavors and traditions of Syria through a variety of homemade foods prepared by refugee chefs, and handcrafted artisan items. Visitors enjoyed favorites such as kibbeh, yalanji, cheese fatayer, ma’mool, makdous, shinklish, mint lemonade, and tamarind juice, while also learning about Mozaic’s work supporting refugees and immigrant families.
The event was a tremendous success and provided an opportunity to share Syrian culture with the wider community, distribute Mozaic informational materials, and connect with new supporters. Through every dish served and every handcrafted item displayed, refugee artisans and entrepreneurs were able to share their talents, traditions, and stories with hundreds of visitors from across the DMV region.
You can continue supporting refugee livelihoods year-round through Mozaic Kitchen and the Mozaic Arabesque Store, which provide income-generating opportunities for refugee women and artisans. Your support helps create pathways toward economic independence while preserving cultural heritage. To help sustain these programs and empower refugee families, please donate at mozaicdmv.org/donate.

Quilting Class, Creativity, and Connection

This spring, Mozaic’s refugee seamstresses had the opportunity to explore the art of quilting through a special workshop led by volunteer sewing instructor Hania Shehadeh. Designed for women who already possessed basic sewing skills, the intimate class introduced participants to quilting techniques while guiding them through the creation of their own personal quilt projects.
More than just a vocational training opportunity, the quilting class provided a welcoming space for women to learn, create, and support one another. As they worked side by side, participants strengthened friendships, shared stories, and built a deeper sense of community. The creative process also served as a valuable mental wellness activity, offering participants a chance to relax, focus, and express themselves through their craft.
Programs like these are made possible through the support of our community. By investing in Mozaic’s Sewing Studio, you help refugee women develop new skills, build confidence, foster meaningful connections, and create pathways toward economic empowerment. To support this work, please visit mozaicdmv.org/donate.

Growing Spiritually During the First Ten Days of Dhulhijjah

During the blessed first ten days of Dhulhijjah, Mozaic partnered with The Jasmine Tree to offer a series of online spiritual gatherings for community members and Mozaic beneficiaries. These virtual programs provided a meaningful opportunity for participants to deepen their connection with Allah while benefiting from the support and encouragement of a like-minded community.
Throughout the ten days, participants took part in inspiring classes, reflections, and Quran recitation groups designed to help them maximize the blessings of this sacred season. The online format made it possible for individuals from different backgrounds and locations to come together in worship, learning, and remembrance.
Beyond the spiritual benefits, the program helped strengthen bonds within the community, creating a space where participants could support one another in their faith journeys. We are grateful to The Jasmine Tree for their partnership in making these enriching gatherings possible and helping our community make the most of these blessed days.

Gardening Workshop

Mozaic collaborated with Girl Scout Zahra Rasouli, and offered two Gardening workshops aimed at increasing awareness around food sustainability and the wellness benefits of gardening.

Participants had a wonderful time planting tomato, squash, and pepper seeds—many enjoying the simple joy of getting their hands into the soil. The workshop created a space for learning, connection, and hands-on experience.

On the last day of May, participants transferred the seedlings to raised garden beds at Aya Montessori. This tripartite collaboration brought joy to the participants as they know that the seeds they planted will be enjoyed by the students at the school! All participants also brought home hygiene kits donated by George Mason University’s Middle Eastern Pre-Health Society (MEPS).

Sewing Class 101

Sewing Skills, Confidence, and Community

Our Spring 2026 Sewing Class 101 is well underway, and participants have now completed five sessions under the guidance of volunteer instructor Cecilia Tran. Women from both refugee and wider community backgrounds are learning foundational sewing skills and taking their first steps toward garment-making. With each class, participants gain greater confidence in using sewing machines, understanding patterns, and creating their own projects.

Beyond the technical skills being taught, the class has become a space for friendship, encouragement, and mutual support. It has been inspiring to watch women from different backgrounds learn alongside one another, share experiences, and build meaningful connections. For refugee participants, these relationships play an important role in fostering a sense of belonging and integration within the wider community. We are deeply grateful to Cecilia for generously sharing her time, patience, and expertise with our students.

Through the Mozaic Sewing Studio, women are gaining more than sewing skills—they are building confidence, strengthening social connections, and accessing pathways toward economic opportunity and financial independence. Help us expand our Sewing Studio and provide more women with tools, materials, and training opportunities. Your support directly empowers refugee and immigrant women to build sustainable futures. Hooks & Books Youth Club Concludes Successful First Round

This month, our four-week Hooks & Books Youth Club came to a successful conclusion, bringing together young girls for a unique blend of reading, creativity, and connection. Throughout the program, participants explored Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga, a powerful novel that sparked meaningful discussions about identity, belonging, resilience, and the immigrant experience.
Alongside their reading journey, the girls learned crochet skills and completed several projects, including beautiful crochet flowers. The hands-on activities encouraged creativity, patience, and confidence while allowing participants to experience the joy of creating something with their own hands. Scholarships were provided to beneficiary families, ensuring that girls who might not otherwise have access to enrichment opportunities could fully participate.
Beyond the books and crochet projects, one of the most valuable outcomes of the program was the sense of community it fostered. Hooks & Books provided a safe, welcoming space where girls could build friendships, support one another, and develop a strong sense of belonging. Through literacy, creativity, and meaningful connections, the program helped nurture the social, emotional, and personal growth of every participant. To help us expand Hooks & Books and provide more opportunities for girls in our community, please consider making a donation at mozaicdmv.org/donate.

In the Spotlight

Volunteer of the Month

Noora Alhomsi

Noora Alhomsi began volunteering with Mozaic when she was just 14 years old, serving as a teacher’s assistant and lending a helping hand wherever it was needed. Over the years, her dedication, reliability, and passion for serving others have made her an invaluable member of the Mozaic family. Today, as a rising high school senior, Noora has taken on a leadership role as one of the instructors for our Kids Sira Club, helping to inspire and guide the next generation

Reflecting on her volunteer journey, Noora shared, “What attracted me to Mozaic is the community. When you volunteer, you don’t do it to show off or boast because it’s not something that can be seen. I love how you meet people from different cultures and countries, coming together with kindness. It’s also a space where you grow—when you serve, you grow internally.”

Noora’s words beautifully capture the spirit of volunteerism at Mozaic. We are deeply grateful for her years of service, leadership, and commitment to uplifting others. Thank you, Noora, for being a shining example of compassion, humility, and community service.

Story of the Month

Zain Alhelal

Zain Alhelal, a student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), arrived in the USA in August 201. The war in Syria forced her family of six to seek refuge in the USA. Zain’s family connected with Mozaic in 2017, and every family member has attended various programs that Mozaic offers – from vocational training to business development and even character building classes.

Today, Zain’s family are home owners and business owners. Mozaic helped her mother, Nour alHuda, launch her home-based hairdressing and beauty salon. Her father works as an electrician, and Zain herself recently launched her own gift bouquet crafting business, Z&H Atelier.

“My connection with Mozaic goes back many years. My family has been involved with Mozaic since 2017, when Mozaic helped my mother launch her own home-based business.

Since then, I have attended programs at Mozaic and volunteered at many Mozaic events, gaining valuable experience, building connections, and learning what it takes to run a business. Those experiences played an important role in giving me the confidence to start my own venture,” wrote Zain.

Aspiring to be a surgeon, Zain has always wanted to start her own business and was inspired to launch Z&H Atelier after seeing a similar concept offered in the UK. ZH Atelier offers gift bouquets of flowers, skincare products, perfume, even cash that customers can request for any occasion. Find out more about Z&H Atelier at https://www.instagram.com/zhatelier/reels/

Testimonies

Asma Rehman, Wellness Volunteer, MSW, LCSW-R

“I have been pleasantly surprised with how open and willing the ladies have been to share their personal experiences in the group alhamdulilah. It has been a beautiful space that creates connection and encourages vulnerability, and many expressed that they look forward to attending which is demonstrated by their punctual attendance each Saturday morning masha’Allah. I wanted to thank the Mozaic team for cultivating a safe and warm space for the ladies to feel comfortable. Many have shared that the Mozaic office is where they feel most safe and like they are home, and the success of this group would not be possible if it wasn’t for the environment that Mozaic had already established for them.”
