Building Safety, Dignity, and Pathways to Independence
It began with an urgent phone call from a concerned community member. A woman and her young child were in a parking lot while her husband shouted at them aggressively. The situation was terrifying, and physical violence appeared imminent.
Mozaic’s team intervened. The woman did not wish to press charges, but she asked for help finding a safe place to stay. Our support extended beyond that immediate crisis. Through career development sessions and job-search assistance, she eventually secured employment that enabled her to support herself and her child.
Behind this brief account lies a much more complicated journey, filled with difficult decisions and challenges.
Her story illustrates an important reality: helping a woman reach safety is only the beginning. Supporting her journey toward independence requires continued care, resources, and opportunities.
Domestic Violence Is More Than Physical Abuse
Domestic violence can involve physical harm, emotional abuse, psychological manipulation, financial control, threats, intimidation, and isolation.
Its consequences often extend beyond the immediate experience of abuse, affecting mental health, family relationships, financial security, and children’s well-being.
For refugee and immigrant women, additional barriers may include limited English proficiency, financial dependency, cultural stigma, social isolation, immigration concerns, and unfamiliarity with available resources.
For many survivors, leaving an abusive relationship raises another difficult question: Where will I go, and how will I support myself and my children?
This is why an effective community response must address both immediate safety and long-term stability.
Mozaic’s Role: Empowerment Beyond the Crisis
At Mozaic, we believe that every woman deserves dignity, safety, and the opportunity to shape her own future.
While specialized domestic violence organizations provide essential crisis intervention and protective services, Mozaic complements their work by focusing on long-term development, emotional well-being, and economic independence.
Our support includes:
- A welcoming community: Providing supportive spaces and opportunities for women to build relationships, overcome isolation, and regain confidence.
- Mental wellness: From April through June 2026, Mozaic organized 10 group therapy sessions with Dari and Arabic interpretation to make mental health support more accessible.
- Career and vocational development: Offering English language education, career guidance, financial literacy, sewing, culinary training, and employment-readiness opportunities.
- Practical assistance: Supporting vulnerable women and families with essential needs, emergency assistance when available, and connections to community resources.
- Long-term empowerment: Helping women gain the knowledge, skills, and financial stability needed to make independent decisions.
These programs are not exclusively designed for survivors of domestic violence, but they can play an important role in helping women rebuild their lives after abuse.
A Collaborative Response to Domestic Violence
Domestic violence requires cooperation among organizations with different areas of expertise.
In October 2026, Mozaic became part of a newly formed coalition of nonprofit organizations working together to support Muslim individuals and families affected by domestic violence.
The coalition brings together organizations to strengthen coordination, share resources, and improve access to culturally sensitive support.
Mozaic also collaborates with FAITH (Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help) in efforts to promote healthy families and connect individuals with appropriate resources.
Through these partnerships, Mozaic contributes to a broader community response focused on prevention, intervention, emotional recovery, and long-term independence.
Beyond Survival: Reclaiming the Future
Survivors of domestic violence are not defined by what they have endured. They are individuals with abilities, aspirations, and the potential to build fulfilling lives.
Recovery may take time, and each woman’s journey is different. Some need immediate protection, others need emotional support, and many need access to education, employment, and financial resources.
At Mozaic, we respect each woman’s choices and recognize that empowerment begins with restoring her ability to make decisions about her own future.
We cannot change what a woman has endured, but we can help create the opportunities, support, and community she needs to shape what comes next.
Domestic violence awareness must lead to meaningful action. By working together, we can help build communities where women and children are safer, survivors are supported, and pathways to independence are accessible.
