PULSE: Growing Youth Leadership, One Step at a Time
Trust doesn’t come easily; especially between youth and adults. It takes time, consistency, and showing up week after week.
PULSE emerged from that trust as Mozaic’s youth-led leadership and mentorship initiative, designed to help young people build skills, confidence, and purpose while turning awareness of health issues and Syria’s medical crisis into action, one device at a time.
Why We Launched PULSE
PULSE was born from the voices of our own youth. Through Mozaic’s youth club, they shared a clear desire for guidance, how to build strong resumes, prepare for competitive universities in the future, and turn their interests into meaningful impact. Many expressed passion for health-related fields and a commitment to helping Syria, even if it meant contributing one medical item at a time.
These ideas didn’t come from a single meeting. They grew over months of shared time—an entire summer spent together, followed by weekly gatherings throughout the year centered on activities, art, and skill-building. Through consistency and presence, trust slowly formed between the Mozaic team and the youth, something that doesn’t come easily, especially when young people are asked to open up to adults.
In response, we proposed PULSE: a program rooted in training, mentorship, and thoughtful guidance, designed to help youth clarify their goals and take real, steady steps toward them.
Our Approach: Learning by Doing
At the heart of PULSE is a simple belief: young people grow when they are trusted with real responsibility. Rather than limiting learning to workshops or lectures, PULSE pairs mentorship with hands-on experience. Youth at Mozaic are guided, supported, and then encouraged to step forward; planning, leading, and making decisions in real settings.
Through this approach, mentorship becomes a relationship, responsibility becomes a learning tool, and trust becomes the foundation. By giving youth real roles, not symbolic ones, we help them build confidence, skills, and a sense of ownership over their growth.
Youth in Action
Since September, PULSE youth have been actively engaged in weekly sessions focused on training, mentorship, and hands-on preparation. Together, they asked questions, explored ideas, planned initiatives, created content, considered different approaches, and practiced presenting their work through slides and discussions.
This process was intentionally iterative. Youth were encouraged to experiment, reflect, and refine their ideas until they arrived at a final model, one that is thoughtful, practical, and ready to be implemented. Through this journey, they stepped beyond participation and into leadership, preparing to lead an upcoming community event for children.
Exposure to the Future
As part of PULSE, youth were introduced to real-world career pathways through a visit to Accenture. There, they experienced a corporate work environment firsthand, met professionals, toured the office, and participated in an AI career development workshop designed specifically for their age group. This experience helped bridge the gap between education and future careers, turning abstract goals into tangible possibilities.
Early Momentum
Momentum is already taking shape. At Mozaic, PULSE youth completed trainings on organizational policies and procedures, volunteering ethics, and event planning. Building on these skills, they are leading the planning of a Game Day for children at the Mozaic Center. Together, they discussed the interests of kids and youth, considered seasonal moments like Ramadan, and designed a thoughtful program, including activities, setup, and flow.
Throughout the event, the Mozaic team will remain present to mentor and guide, supporting youth step by step, from children’s sign-in to ensuring they leave safely with their parents.
What’s Next
Looking ahead, PULSE will continue to grow step by step. In March, youth will begin hosting their first health awareness workshop at the Mozaic Center, featuring a notable speaker to address topics relevant to their age group. They are also planning a family movie day, creating a welcoming space for connection and shared experience. As PULSE moves forward, youth will continue learning, leading, and building confidence through thoughtfully guided opportunities.
