Mozaic December 2025 Newsletter

Message from the Executive Director

Dear friends and community partners,
This December, as the year comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on the power of connection—across generations, cultures, and experiences. At Mozaic, we’ve seen it come alive through celebrating Syrian culture, engaging youth in meaningful conversations about belonging and identity, exploring positive parenting strategies, and sharing mindful moments in our women’s and children’s programs.
These experiences remind us that every shared moment—learning, listening, or simply being present—strengthens our community. Thank you for being part of that journey with us.
With gratitude,
Raghad Bushnaq
Executive Director, Mozaic

The Mozaic Digest

This digest brings you the latest breaking news on U.S. and international policies affecting Syria and refugee populations, offering clear updates on the decisions shaping our community.

Update on U.S. Travel Restrictions Affecting Multiple Countries

The U.S. government has expanded the travel ban to 39 countries, including Syria, creating significant barriers for refugees, asylum-seekers, and families seeking entry to the United States. The accompanying map from No Muslim Ban Ever visually shows which countries are fully and partially restricted, making the impact clear at a glance. Recent reports from Seattle’s ACRS and Milwaukee’s Community Center for Immigrants indicate that some oath ceremonies have been canceled for individuals from affected countries. The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy (MIRA) Coalition has also highlighted cases where individuals were pulled from scheduled oath ceremonies, demonstrating the real consequences these policies have on families and community members seeking naturalization.

U.S. Government Signals Increased Denaturalization Activity Affecting Naturalized Citizens

Recent reporting indicates that the U.S. government is planning to significantly expand denaturalization efforts — potentially pursuing hundreds of cases per month in 2026 — a sharp rise from historical averages of about a dozen cases per year. The initiative reflects broader changes in enforcement priorities and could affect naturalized citizens if authorities allege fraud or misrepresentation in past naturalization applications.

U.S. Travel Ban Expansion

The U.S. government’s expanded travel ban now fully restricts citizens from Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, South Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Eritrea, Haiti, and other countries, while partial restrictions apply to additional nations. Advocacy organizations such as No Muslim Ban Ever and Refugee Council USA have condemned the policy, citing its discriminatory impact and harmful effect on displaced populations. The expansion disrupts opportunities for family reunification, education, and lawful immigration, emphasizing the urgent need for continued advocacy and support.

DHS Terminates Family Reunification Parole (FRP) Programs

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ended all categorical FRP programs for citizens of Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras, returning parole to a case-by-case process. Parole granted under these programs will expire on January 14, 2026, unless a Form I-485 application is pending as of December 15, 2025. Employment authorization granted under FRP will also be revoked when parole ends. Individuals without lawful status must depart the U.S. by the termination date, though DHS provides support through the CBP Home app for travel assistance and civil fine forgiveness. This policy change has a direct impact on families seeking reunification and underscores the importance of monitoring federal policy developments.

Resources and Ongoing Support

To help individuals and families navigate recent federal immigration policy changes, publicly available guidance and tools remain accessible through government and oversight sources. These include policy information for naturalization‑eligible individuals, publicly reported data on naturalization trends, and congressional oversight dashboards tracking immigration enforcement activity. State-level policy summaries and technical guidance also provide context on how federal changes may be implemented locally. In addition, community-based mutual aid networks and service providers continue to offer practical assistance, referrals, and emergency support to families affected by policy disruptions or enforcement actions.

Parenting Workshop: Raising Children with Faith & Wisdom

On Saturday, December 13th, Mozaic DMV partnered with FAITH Social Services and Glass Lamp Institute to host an inspiring workshop for parents focused on mindful and intentional parenting. Facilitated by Dr. Zainab Alwani and Othman Altalib, the session offered practical strategies, thoughtful discussion, and guidance for raising children with empathy, confidence, and strong family connections.

This session highlighted the importance of conscious, values-driven parenting and provided the community with an opportunity to engage with experienced facilitators in a meaningful and interactive setting.

Women’s Mindful Stretching Session

On Wednesday, December 17th, we hosted a rejuvenating mindful stretching session as part of our biweekly women’s programming. This event provided stay-at-home mothers and women in the community with an opportunity to leave the house, connect with friends, and engage in gentle exercises designed to relax both body and mind.
Participants enjoyed a supportive and social environment, where they could chat, share experiences, and even learn new skills while practicing mindfulness and movement. The session emphasized self-care, community connection, and the importance of carving out time for personal well-being.
This gathering reminded us that small moments of reflection, movement, and connection can make a big difference, and we are grateful to everyone who joined to share in this uplifting experience.

Winter Program: Pajamas & Sweet Dreams

On Monday, December 23rd, we hosted Pajamas & Sweet Dreams, a hands-on winter program for children. Kids came in their pajamas, enjoyed hot chocolate, and participated in interactive activity stations where they learned and practiced positive bedtime routines in a fun and engaging way.
Each activity allowed children to create mini gifts to take home, reinforcing the lessons from the session while encouraging creativity and reflection. Beyond the activities, the program provided a space for kids to connect with peers, explore new ideas, and enjoy a playful, winter-themed experience.
Pajamas & Sweet Dreams was a joyful celebration of learning, creativity, and connection. We are grateful to all the children and families who joined us, making the session memorable, meaningful, and full of laughter.

Spotlight on Izza Husami: Helping Bring 'Echoes of Freedom' to Life

Izza Husami is a Syrian mother born and raised in Homs, Syria. She studied accounting and graduated from Aleppo University before immigrating to the United States 25 years ago. After working as an accountant, she now serves as a professional tax preparer during tax season.
“I was truly proud to participate in Mozaic’s Echoes of Freedom event, which celebrated Syrian culture and the resilience of our people,” Izza shared. “As I spoke about the values and landmarks of my hometown, Homs, the joy in the crowd was unmistakable.” She noted that Mozaic reflected this same spirit through vibrant Dabke and Mawlawiya performances, while highlighting the values and heritage of cities across Syria.
Izza also praised the Mozaic team’s exceptional organization. “We met twice in advance and received clear guidance by email, with parking and arrival thoughtfully coordinated,” she said. “From the moment we arrived, volunteers welcomed us, helped us unload, and guided us to tables that were already set up. The environment felt smooth, professional, and incredibly supportive.”
This experience was especially meaningful for Izza as her 15-year-old daughter confidently participated as a young vendor. “Seeing her take part with such confidence made the day even more special for our family,” she added.

Story of the Month

Preserving Syria Through the Lens: The Legacy of Saad Fansa

For more than three decades, Saad Fansa has devoted his life to preserving Syria’s cultural memory. A historian, archaeologist, and photographer, he documented Syria’s ancient cities, artistic traditions, and everyday beauty with deep care and unwavering commitment.
Fansa began his career at the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Damascus, eventually becoming Director of the Photography Department. His work took him across the country — from Palmyra and Ugarit to Aleppo, Raqqa, and Apamea — capturing rare images of excavations, monuments, and landscapes, including aerial photography. Today, these photographs form an irreplaceable visual archive of Syria before the war.
An educator at heart, he taught photography at the College of Archaeology, authored a textbook adopted by the Ministry of Higher Education, and wrote a long-running weekly column in Founoun magazine, making archaeological discoveries accessible to the public. He also directed major documentary films, including projects for the Aga Khan Award for Islamic Architecture and Damascus: Capital of Arab Culture 2008, and represented Syria at cultural heritage conferences across the region.
More recently, Mr. Fansa collaborated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art on efforts to protect endangered heritage in Syria and Iraq, training specialists in photographic and digital documentation. His work has been recognized by UNESCO, the Arab League, and numerous cultural institutions. As a co-founder of the Damascus Archaeological Society, he also preserves a rare personal archive documenting decades of Syrian history.
At our recent gathering, we were honored to hear Mr. Fansa speak on Syria’s historical significance and the impact of war on its cultural heritage, and to present a curated exhibition of 20 of his photographs — powerful images capturing Syria’s architectural beauty, ancient sites, and cultural soul.
