Mozaic February 2026 Newsletter

Message from the Executive Director

Dear Mozaic community,
In this blessed month, our community gathers not only to worship, but to uplift. Ramadan comes each year to realign us, to remind us that what we give for the sake of Allah is never lost.
Allah says:
“The example of those who spend their wealth for the sake of Allah is like a seed that grows seven ears; in every ear is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills.” (2:261)
In a time when many are carrying responsibilities and uncertainties, generosity may feel heavier — yet it is precisely in such moments that trust in Allah deepens.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Tirmidhi – Hasan)
At Mozaic, we witness this promise unfold daily. A rent payment becomes stability. A sewing class becomes dignity. A youth mentorship becomes direction. A warm meal becomes reassurance that someone cares.
Ramadan is not only about personal worship — it is about collective elevation. When 190 women stand in qiyam, when volunteers prepare quietly behind the scenes, when supporters give with sincerity — this is faith made visible.
Your support is not a transaction. It is a partnership in building lives, strengthening families, and nurturing faith in our community.

May Allah accept from you your fasting, your prayer, and the الخير you extend — seen and unseen.

Ramadan Mubarak

The Mozaic Digest

This digest brings you the latest breaking news on U.S. and international policies affecting Syria and refugee populations, offering clear updates on the decisions shaping our community.

U.S. Government Signals Possible Diplomatic Shift in Syria

In February, the U.S. State Department notified Congress of preliminary planning related to a potential phased reopening of the U.S. Embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since 2012. No official reopening date has been announced, and any change would depend on security conditions and further government approvals.
If implemented, this could affect future diplomatic engagement, consular services, and U.S.–Syria relations.

Adjustment of U.S. Military Presence in Northeast Syria

Late-February reporting indicates that U.S. forces have begun withdrawing from a primary military base in northeast Syria, while maintaining a limited presence at other locations. This adjustment reflects evolving U.S. operational priorities in Syria and may influence regional security conditions and humanitarian access in affected areas.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians Under Supreme Court Review

In late February, the U.S. government submitted a request to the U.S. Supreme Court seeking permission to proceed with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians currently residing in the United States. TPS allows eligible Syrians to remain in the U.S. and work legally due to ongoing unsafe conditions in Syria.
A lower court order currently blocks the termination from taking effect while legal review continues.

Federal Court Ruling Affects U.S. Deportation Procedures

In February, a U.S. federal court ruled that deporting individuals to countries other than their country of origin without adequate notice or opportunity to challenge removal does not meet required legal standards. While not Syria-specific, the ruling affects U.S. immigration enforcement procedures that may impact Syrians navigating removal or immigration proceedings.

Mozaic Highlights

Unplug & Play

On Sunday, February 1st, Mozaic’s new youth initiative PULSE hosted its first event, Unplug & Play — an engaging afternoon for children filled with screen-free games, hands-on activities, and creative fun. Held from 3:00–5:00 PM, the event offered kids the chance to connect, play, and explore in a supportive and interactive environment.
PULSE (Promoting Unity, Leadership, and Skill-building Experiences) is Mozaic’s youth-led leadership and mentorship program, designed to help young people build confidence, skills, and purpose while turning ideas into meaningful action. This first event allowed PULSE youth to plan, organize, and lead activities, putting their training and mentorship into practice for the community.
The afternoon featured a variety of interactive games, collaborative challenges, and creative exercises — all designed to encourage children to engage with peers, have fun, and learn through play. By combining entertainment with intentional, screen-free engagement, Unplug & Play highlighted PULSE’s mission to empower youth through responsibility, leadership, and real-world experience, while inspiring the next generation to take initiative and make a positive difference.

Mid-Shaaban Ibadah Program

On Monday, February 2nd, Mozaic hosted a special Mid-Sha’ban Ibadah Program, bringing community members together to pray, reflect, and seek spiritual renewal at the midpoint of Sha’ban. The program offered a peaceful and purposeful space for attendees to pause from daily routines and focus on worship and contemplation.
Our CEO, Raghad Bushnaq, led the session with a heartfelt reminder, emphasizing reflection, gratitude, and preparation for the blessings of the coming month of Ramadan. Participants engaged in collective prayer, reflection, and quiet moments of personal supplication, fostering a sense of spiritual connection and communal unity.
This gathering highlighted Mozaic’s commitment to nurturing faith, reflection, and community, providing members with an opportunity to grow spiritually while connecting with others who share a dedication to mindful worship.

Barakah Boutique - Green Sale

On Saturday, February 7th, Mozaic hosted the Barakah Boutique Green Sale, offering a curated selection of donated clothing at affordable prices. From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, community members explored racks filled with children’s and adult clothing, including casual wear, formal attire, dresses, and cultural garments — all available at budget-friendly prices.
The event provided an opportunity for families to access high-quality clothing while promoting sustainability and community support, as all items were generously donated. Attendees enjoyed browsing a wide variety of pieces, connecting with others in the community, and leaving with wardrobe finds that combined style, practicality, and cultural pride.
The Green Sale showcased Mozaic’s commitment to resource-sharing, community engagement, and environmentally conscious initiatives, creating a meaningful space where families could meet their needs while supporting one another.
Many of the beneficiary families were pleased to be able to shop for brand new and gently used outfits for free. Here’s some feedback from them:
“I appreciate the hard work of Mozaic’s staff, this gathering had a more meaningful meaning, beyond the shopping experience. The beauty of our religion and empathy were displayed. My heart was filled with joy, I thought I was in my homeland and at home.” – Z

Food Box Distribution

On Thursday, February 12th, Mozaic, in partnership with IMF, packed Ramadan Food Boxes for families across the DMV. These families consist of refugees, asylum seekers, single mothers, converts, cancer stricken patients and other families that we have supported through various educational programs and direct assistance.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, each box was filled with essential food items such as rice (two 10lb bags), dates (4.4lb box), packs of pasta, canned tuna, olives, ghee, cooking oil, olive oil, legumes, date cookies, vermicelli and more, to help families break their fast with dignity, nourishment, and care during the blessed month of Ramadan.
This distribution reflects Mozaic’s commitment to supporting families facing food insecurity, including refugees and newly arrived households. By combining community generosity with intentional action, the program ensured that families had access to culturally appropriate, wholesome meals — bringing comfort, relief, and the spirit of Ramadan to those in need.
The event highlighted the power of collective giving and community partnership, turning donations into tangible support and meaningful impact for families navigating challenging circumstances.
A special thanks to the IMF volunteers for collaborating with Mozaic again this year.

Annual Ramadan Community Iftar: Lanterns of Syria

On Sunday, February 22, 2026, Mozaic hosted its Annual Ramadan Community Iftar at The Westin Washington Dulles Airport Hotel, bringing together families, community leaders, and partners for an evening rooted in reflection, unity, and service. This year’s gathering aligned with our Lanterns of Syria initiative, highlighting themes of light, dignity, and rebuilding hope for families affected by war and displacement.
Our Board Member and Marketing Department Head walked the audience through Mozaic’s mission and vision, grounding them in measurable impact. From refugee families served and meals distributed to youth programs, vocational training, and community initiatives, he illustrated how our values translate into tangible outcomes and lasting change.
The program featured thoughtful reminders and reflections from Dr. Altaf Husein, PhD, MSW, Vice President of the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research, and Dr. Hassan Zahwa, Vice Chair of ADAMS Fairfax and global health informatics leader. Their insights shed light on ongoing humanitarian needs in Syria and inspired attendees to take meaningful action in support of vulnerable families.
Nasheed performances by ADAMS BEAT — America’s first Masjid youth choir — and Brother Ghuydar Bashmaf added a soulful, uplifting dimension to the evening, creating a reflective and celebratory atmosphere.
Our CEO, Raghad Bushnaq, reflected on Mozaic’s 10-year journey — from its humble beginnings serving a few families with limited resources, to becoming a trusted pillar of support for refugees and the wider community. She shared the struggles, milestones, and collective sacrifices that shaped Mozaic’s growth, and highlighted how faith, perseverance, and community solidarity carried the organization to where it stands today.
Guests enjoyed an evening of fellowship, music, and opportunities to engage with Mozaic’s broader initiatives, including projects supporting homes for displaced Syrian families.
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and supporters, this iftar brought the community together to celebrate faith, strengthen connections, and contribute to a collective impact for families locally and internationally.

Ladies Ramadan Qiyaam: A Night of Prayer and Reflection

On Saturday, February 28, Mozaic hosted a Ladies Ramadan Qiyaam from 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM, providing women in our community a sacred space to spend the night in prayer, du’a, and reflection.
The evening offered moments of deep spiritual connection, as attendees engaged in collective worship, heartfelt supplications, and meaningful reminders that fostered mindfulness and devotion during the blessed month of Ramadan. The program created a peaceful environment for women to strengthen their relationship with Allah, reflect on personal growth, and immerse themselves in the spiritual significance of the night.
This gathering highlighted Mozaic’s commitment to supporting women in their spiritual journeys, nurturing community, and fostering an atmosphere of reflection, serenity, and devotion.

In the Spotlight

Volunteer of the Month

Dana Atiyat

Born and raised in Jordan, she moved to the United States at 15, first living in New York before settling in Virginia, where she has now been for 13 years. With a background in Visual Communications, she has always had a passion for creativity and design. A mother of four and small business owner, she loves creating meaningful projects that bring people together, especially within the Muslim community.
Her journey with Mozaic began through her close relationship with Mozaic’s founder, Raghad Bushnaq. She helped launch and manage the very first Kids Sirah Club, which met weekly at the library for several years. Being part of Mozaic’s early grassroots efforts created a deep connection to the mission from the very beginning. For her, volunteering is a natural extension of her faith and talents. She believes each person is gifted with skills by Allah and should use them in service of others. Contributing her creativity and organizational strengths to Mozaic felt meaningful, and over time, the team became like family.
One of her favorite experiences was helping organize community gatherings, especially last year’s Eid celebration for local refugee families. Seeing families come together in joy and unity reminded her that “strong communities are built by ordinary people who choose to show up with sincere hearts.” To her, community service means investing in something bigger than yourself, showing up with sincerity and intention to help others feel valued and connected. We are so grateful for the dedication, creativity, and heart she continues to bring to Mozaic.

Story of the Month

Farida Al-Bitar

For Fareeda Al-Bitar, the journey from Jordan to the United States has been shaped by faith, identity, and the timeless beauty of the Arabic letter. An American of Jordanian and Syrian origin now living in Chantilly, Virginia, Fareeda has transformed her lifelong passion for Arabic calligraphy into a meaningful artistic project that carries culture across borders.
Her love for calligraphy began years ago, but after immigrating, it became something deeper, a bridge connecting her to home. She first began by writing the names of her children and husband, finding comfort in the familiar curves of Arabic script. Over time, her work expanded to Quranic verses, where the elegance and spirituality of the language truly shine.
What started as a hobby soon grew into a side business she named “Nun,” inspired by the Quranic verse: “Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe.” Through “Nun,” Fareeda creates hand-written calligraphy pieces featuring Quranic verses and personalized names. Each artwork is uniquely designed, no two are ever the same, making them meaningful gifts and cherished additions to homes, especially children’s rooms where identity and culture are nurtured.
Her process is intentional and meticulous. A single piece can take days or even weeks to complete, as each stage builds carefully upon the last. In a world of mass production, Fareeda remains committed to the patience and precision of handcrafted art. Balancing her work with her responsibilities as a mother and wife is not without challenges, but what keeps her going is clear: her deep love for Arabic calligraphy and her desire to honor the beauty of the Quran. Seeing her artwork displayed in homes across her community reminds her that her work is more than decoration, it is connection.
What began as a personal passion has become a mission to spread beauty, spirituality, and cultural pride through art. Fareeda’s story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of staying connected to one’s roots, one letter at a time.

Help Build a Roof for a Displaced Family

Years of war have left countless Syrian families without a place to call home. Among them is a family of 12 — six adults and six children — who have been displaced repeatedly, forced to live in temporary spaces and pay rent they cannot afford.
Their original home still stands, but only with damaged walls and a collapsed ceiling. What they need is simple yet life-changing: rebuilding the walls and ceilings of three rooms and restoring basic electricity and water, so they can finally live with dignity, safety, and stability.

For this family, a repaired home means:

  • No more moving every few months
  • No more overwhelming rent draining their limited income
  • A stable roof that protects children and allows adults to rebuild their lives
Contributions to this fund go directly toward construction materials, labor, and essential utilities. Each donation brings this family one step closer to sleeping under their own roof — safely, permanently, and with dignity.
We are grateful to share that we are currently in the process of completing our first house in Syria, marking an important milestone in this effort.

Together, we can make a meaningful difference for families during this sacred time.
Jazakum Allahu khayran for your continued support.

Sponsor Ramadan Meals on Wheels

During Ramadan, some families in our community face food insecurity while also navigating illness, age, disability, or limited mobility. Ramadan Meals on Wheels helps ensure they receive hot, nutritious, and culturally appropriate meals, delivered directly to their homes.
