Message from the Executive Director

Dear friends and community partners,
As we wrap up the month of November, Mozaic remains dedicated to supporting the well-being of the women and families we serve. This month, we focused on movement, mindfulness, and mental health through our women’s walking club, Qigong class, and caregiver burnout workshop. We were grateful to welcome many of you to our Open House and to celebrate the launch of our new community library.
With your continued support and compassion, we are not only uplifting individual journeys but strengthening our community as a whole.
With gratitude,
Raghad Bushnaq
Executive Director, Mozaic

Policy Update

This month, we continue to see federal policy moves that have real and direct implications for refugees, asylum-seekers, and displaced families—especially those from Syria and the wider Middle East

Resettlement Pipeline Severely Restricted

The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) caps have been officially set at just 7,500 for FY 2026, the lowest in the program’s history. Global Refuge+2Refugees+2 This significantly worsens the backlog of already-approved refugee cases and dramatically narrows the pathway for many Syrians and other displaced families seeking protection.
What this means for families: If you or loved ones are in the pipeline, expect much longer waits and fewer openings. Mozaic remains committed to tracking these changes, advocating for more equitable policy, and working with partner organizations to support families stuck in limbo.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians – Court Blocks Termination

A major development in immigration policy: On November 19, 2025, a federal judge blocked the administration’s attempt to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians. The ruling prevents the government from stripping temporary deportation protections and work permits from more than 6,100 Syrians while a legal challenge moves forward.
The court found that the abrupt termination of TPS was likely unlawful and possibly motivated by discriminatory intent. This decision means Syrians with TPS can continue living and working in the U.S. as the case proceeds.

What this means for families:

Syrian TPS holders can retain their protections and work authorization for now. However, this relief is temporary and tied to ongoing litigation. Families should stay informed, monitor official updates closely, and connect with trusted legal resources to understand next steps. Mozaic will continue supporting impacted families through updates, guidance, and referrals to immigration attorneys and advocacy partners.

SNAP Eligibility Restrictions Deepen Food Insecurity

Under H.R. 1 (One Big Beautiful Bill Act), eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has been narrowed; many refugees, asylees, and families with humanitarian status may no longer qualify unless they become lawful permanent residents. National Immigration Law Center
What this means for families: The changes may affect food assistance for newly arrived or still-settling households. Mozaic is stepping up communications about alternative food supports, local relief options, and food-security counseling.

National Guard Shooting Spurs Federal Policy Freeze

A deadly shooting involving National Guard members in Washington, DC prompted federal agencies to reassess security and immigration processes. Officials report the suspect had been radicalized domestically.

Asylum Decisions Temporarily Suspended Nationwide

Following the same incident, the U.S. government announced a nationwide pause on asylum decisions pending updated vetting procedures and security guidelines.

Visa Freeze for Afghan Applicants

In the wake of the deadly shooting and internal security review, the U.S. has temporarily halted processing for key visa categories affecting Afghan applicants. Advocacy groups warn the freeze could further endanger families awaiting resettlement.

Mozaic Highlights

Winter Warmth Distribution

This month, Mozaic completed a successful Winter Clothing Distribution for our beneficiary families. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we collected brand-new winter coats, boots, hats, gloves, and other essentials. Our families were able to choose the items they needed most, ensuring children and adults alike are prepared for the cold months ahead. Your donations brought dignity, warmth, and comfort to dozens of households this season.

Community Clothing Alteration Service

Mozaic’s Sewing Studio continues to uplift women through hands-on skills and real pathways to entrepreneurship. One of our recent graduates, a Syrian refugee who arrived in the U.S. just last year, is now offering a weekly alteration and mending service for the community. This opportunity allows her to earn income, build confidence, and integrate into her new home while working toward launching her own small business, inshaAllah.
Bring your garments for tailoring, repairs, or adjustments every Tuesday from 10:30am–12:30pm.

Walking Club

Our November Women’s Walking Club brought together women of all ages for gentle movement, conversation, and connection. Led by our wellness team, the group enjoyed mindful walks that encouraged community bonding, stress relief, and physical activity. The club offered a warm and supportive space for women to step outside, breathe, and prioritize their well-being in a simple but meaningful way

Arabic Storytime

Our November Arabic Storytime was hosted in partnership with Shatara Kids, a beloved Arabic storytelling platform for children. The session featured engaging stories, lively songs, and interactive moments that kept kids excited and connected to the Arabic language. Families were introduced to Shatara Kids’ rich library of animated and live-action stories available on their YouTube channel, where children can learn valuable life lessons through music, characters, and creative narratives. This collaboration made our Storytime especially joyful, educational, and enriching for our young learners.

From Burnout to Balance: Copying with Caregiver Stress

Our Caregiver Burnout Workshop offered much-needed support for community members navigating the emotional, mental, and physical demands of caring for loved ones. The session was led by Salma Abugideiri, LPC, a highly respected therapist from Wellness Through Counseling known for her compassionate approach and decades of experience supporting individuals and families.
Salma guided participants through understanding the signs of burnout, setting healthy boundaries, and incorporating practical self-care strategies into daily life. Through open discussion, reflective exercises, and evidence-based tools, she created a safe and validating space where caregivers felt seen, heard, and empowered. Attendees left with renewed clarity, helpful resources, and a sense of community support as they continue their caregiving journeys.

Open House

Our November Open House was a milestone event for our organization, bringing together community members, neighbors, partners, and distinguished guests. We were honored to welcome local representatives, congressional offices, board of visitors, and community leaders, all of whom joined us to learn more about Mozaic’s mission and growing impact.
The event served as Mozaic’s official introduction to the wider community, offering guided tours of our center, conversations with staff and volunteers, and an inside look at our expanding programming – including education, wellness, family support, and empowerment initiatives. Guests had the opportunity to meet the team, explore our classrooms and new library space, and engage in meaningful discussions around refugee support and community collaboration.
The Open House highlighted our vision for future partnerships and collective growth. We look forward to building strong, lasting collaborations with the representatives, organizations, and neighbors who joined us, as we continue working together to uplift families with dignity, compassion, and opportunity.

Mozaic Library Launch

We proudly launched the Mozaic Library this month—an inviting new space designed to inspire learning, curiosity, and access to knowledge for all ages. Community members explored shelves filled with over 2,000 books, with a continually growing collection featuring titles in both English and Arabic for children, teens, and adults. Guests also learned about our upcoming paid membership options, which will provide families with full borrowing privileges and access to special library programs.
The launch marked an exciting milestone for Mozaic, expanding our commitment to education and creating a warm, welcoming home for readers of all backgrounds.

Qigong

Our November Qigong session introduced women to the calming practice of slow, intentional movement rooted in traditional Chinese wellness. Participants learned breathing techniques, grounding exercises, and gentle flows that promote balance, relaxation, and mental clarity. The class created a peaceful environment where women could release stress, reconnect with their bodies, and enjoy an hour of restorative community care.

In the Spotlight

Volunteer of the Month

Kouthar Alouini

For almost two years, Kouthar has been an active and dedicated member of the Mozaic community. What began as a simple intention to give back quickly grew into something deeper—an opportunity to contribute to a mission rooted in compassion, service, and community.
Reflecting on her journey, Kouthar shares, “Volunteering at Mozaic has been such a meaningful experience, alhamdulilah. It’s not only about helping out, but also contributing to something bigger.”
What makes Mozaic stand out to her isn’t just the volunteer work itself—it’s the people. The friendships formed, the connections with refugees, and the sincerity behind every service reflect the unique spirit that keeps her coming back.
She explains, “Although volunteering is already wonderful, Mozaic stands out to me because it isn’t just about volunteering; it’s a community. The refugees, the many friendships made along the way, and the intention behind every service makes Mozaic special.”
For Kouthar, this experience is more than fulfilling—it’s divinely placed. She reflects, “I believe Allah SWT has placed me here to be surrounded by amazing people, all striving to serve in the best way we can. It’s truly a blessing that I’m grateful for every day.”
Her commitment, sincerity, and heart remind us of the quiet yet powerful impact volunteers bring to the Mozaic family—one act of service at a time.

Story of the Month

Soad Alhamada

For Soad, building a new life in the United States has been a journey shaped by courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her family. A mother of four, Soad arrived just over a year ago with her husband after years of displacement—first fleeing their home in Syria, then living in Jordan as refugees. When they reached the U.S., they brought with them not only hope for safety, but a determination to build a future rooted in opportunity.
“When someone believes in you, it changes everything,” she shares. “Mozaic believed in me before I believed in myself.”
With little English and an unfamiliar culture to navigate, the entire family embraced learning from the very start. Both parents enrolled in ESOL classes, and the children entered public school eager to adapt, grow, and make the U.S. feel like home. From the beginning, Mozaic has been a consistent presence in their journey. Soad’s children attend storytimes, kids’ workshops, and other Mozaic programs, and her son is currently enrolled in our Morals and Manners class—each activity helping them learn, connect, and thrive.
Recently, Soad took a remarkable step forward of her own. With a natural talent for sewing and a desire to contribute to her family’s future, she partnered with Mozaic to launch a small clothing alterations service. Every Tuesday, during a designated drop-off window, community members bring her items for hemming, resizing, button and zipper replacements, and more. If you’d like to submit an item, you can do click here: z5m6. Through this opportunity, Soad has begun earning her own income while building the foundation for what she hopes will soon become an independent business.
Today, Soad is building her English skills, raising her children, and growing her entrepreneurial talent with confidence and purpose. Her progress shines through in every step she takes, reflecting her determination to create new opportunities for herself and her family. She reminds us how far someone can go when they are met with support, encouragement, and a community that believes in their potential.
At Mozaic, we are honored to support Soad and celebrate her accomplishments. Her story reminds us that when we uplift one woman, we strengthen not only her family’s future, but the community as a whole.

Mozaic Reflects on Our 2017 Celebration: The Power of Togetherness
Mozaic is taking a heartfelt trip down memory lane to our joyful 2017 gathering — a room overflowing with laughter, homemade food, and warm embraces as newly arrived refugee families became part of our community. This throwback is more than nostalgia: it’s a reminder of what can be built when hearts open and people unite. Read more about how those early connections continue to inspire our work today.

Mozaic Library – Book of the Month

The Secret Library of Syria by Mike Thomson

The Secret Library of Syria is a powerful and deeply moving true story set in the heart of Darayya, a besieged city outside Damascus. Amid constant bombardment and unimaginable hardship, a group of brave young Syrians created something extraordinary: a hidden underground library built from books salvaged from destroyed homes.
This secret sanctuary became more than a place to read. It became a symbol of resistance, hope, and the unbreakable human spirit. Even as war raged above them, these men and women gathered to learn, discuss, and preserve their identity, proving that knowledge is not a luxury—it’s a form of resilience.
This book beautifully echoes the spirit of our library launch this month. Just as the youth of Darayya built a space for their community to learn, grow, and heal, our own library represents a commitment to education, empowerment, and creating safe spaces for knowledge—especially for those whose stories too often go unheard.
Highlighting this book is our way of honoring Syria’s resilience, celebrating the power of literacy, and reminding our community that access to books can ignite hope even in the darkest of times.

Partnerships

Shatara Kids: Arabic Storytime & Collaborative Story Animation

Mozaic was delighted to partner with Shatara Kids for a special Arabic Storytime held on Saturday, November 8th. During this joyful session, children came together to create their own story — imagining characters, building a plot, and collaborating in a way that brought their creativity to life.

Shatara Kids will soon be producing an animated video of the story on their YouTube channel, turning the children’s ideas into a vibrant visual experience that families can enjoy again and again. You can follow their work here:

We look forward to another exciting collaboration with Shatara Kids this coming January, continuing our shared mission of nurturing language, imagination, and cultural connection through storytelling.

Wellness Through Counseling: “From Burnout to Balance” Caregiver Wellness Workshop

Mozaic was grateful to partner with Salma Abugideiri of Wellness Through Counseling on Sunday, November 9th for an important community workshop titled “From Burnout to Balance: Coping with Caregiver Stress.”
Salma led a compassionate and deeply insightful discussion on understanding caregiver burnout, recognizing the emotional and physical toll it can take and developing healthier ways to balance responsibilities with personal well-being. The space quickly became one of openness, vulnerability, and mutual support — with attendees sharing their experiences and finding comfort in knowing they are not alone.
This session was not only informative, but truly needed within our community. We are deeply appreciative of Salma’s expertise and the healing environment she created, and we look forward to future opportunities to bring empowering mental-wellness programs to our families.
