Mozaic Executive Director Meets the Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry
The Executive Director of Mozaic met with the Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry, alongside members of the Syrian American Business Council, to discuss the future of Syria’s economy. The meeting explored collaboration opportunities, updates from the Minister’s recent discussions with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and strategies to engage returning professionals in rebuilding Syria’s economic sectors.
Following the meeting, Mozaic held internal consultations to develop strategies that would help graduates and young professionals find employment aligned with their specializations, and to identify ways the organization can collaborate with Syrian ministries to create smoother pathways for job placement and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Education Committee Focuses on Youth Challenges and Career Integration
The Education Committee convened to address the challenges facing our community youth, particularly those attending public schools. The committee proposed several supportive programs and workshops for 2026 aimed at helping young people develop practical skills and engage in meaningful, empowering activities.
Career Development Committee Examines Job Market Trends
The Career Development Committee at Mozaic held an open discussion on the current job market, identifying careers in high demand and examining the impact of the U.S. government shutdown on employment access for refugees and immigrant communities. The discussion also explored income and benefits disparity across generations, focusing on how younger and older workers experience different challenges in achieving financial stability.
The committee continues to provide mentorship, training, and resources to help refugees navigate both the U.S. and Syrian labor markets, while developing strategies that promote fair income growth and career advancement for all generations.
Policy Update
SNAP Freeze Deepens Food Insecurity
This month, we witnessed how federal policy decisions directly impact families in our community. The SNAP benefit freeze has left many newly arrived neighbors struggling to put food on the table — facing impossible choices no parent should have to make. Mozaic continues to advocate for expanded access to basic needs assistance and community-driven solutions to ensure every family can eat with dignity.
Refugee Admissions Cap Reduced
In late October, the Trump Administration announced a reduction of the U.S. refugee admissions cap to just 7,500 for 2026 — the lowest in modern history. This heartbreaking decision leaves over 120,000 already-vetted refugees waiting in limbo and severs the pipeline for thousands more seeking family reunification and safety in the United States. Mozaic stands with refugee families and partner organizations nationwide in calling for humane, just, and compassionate resettlement policies.

Program Highlights
Arabic Storytime
Our October 4th Arabic Storytime was led by Hana Salah, who captivated children ages 4–8 with her lively storytelling, puppets, songs, and interactive activities. Each child made a jeweled crown, joined in a fun quiz, and took home a Polaroid photo and worksheets to continue the lesson. Hana’s warmth, creativity, and effort to connect with every child and parent made the session a joyful and memorable community experience.
Vision Building & Goal Setting Workshop
Mozaic hosted a full-day Vision Building and Goal Setting Workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., attended by sixteen enthusiastic young women. Led by faith-based productivity trainer Sister Uzma Unus (from Intentionally by Design) and Life Coach Sohaira Sultan (from Pieces of Purpose), the workshop focused on self-discovery, intention setting, time management, and practical goal-setting. Participants created personalized vision boards to visualize their dreams and learn how to turn them into achievable actions.
The day was filled with energy, creativity, and connection as the girls made new friends, shared ideas, and supported one another’s growth. By the end of the workshop, the room buzzed with excitement and inspiration, reflecting a renewed sense of purpose and confidence in achieving their goals.
Walking Club
Our first-ever Walking Club took place on October 23rd and was a wonderful success! Participants ages 18+ enjoyed a peaceful fall walk around Mosaic, taking in the crisp air and colorful scenery. After the walk, everyone gathered for tea and refreshments, sharing meaningful conversations, reflections, and laughter. It was a beautiful blend of wellness, connection, and community — and we’re excited to announce that our Walking Club will now be meeting biweekly, so stay tuned for many more walks to come!

Our Night of Noor on October 31st was a vibrant and inspiring evening that brought together boys and girls ages 4–13 for a night full of fun, creativity, and reflection. The program highlighted stories of remarkable women from history who demonstrated courage, kindness, and strong character, helping the children connect those lessons to their own lives in meaningful ways. With games, crafts, and engaging discussions, participants explored what it means to be compassionate, brave, and resilient. The night ended with laughter, new friendships, and hearts full of inspiration and light.
In the Spotlight
For nearly two decades, Taslim Satya has called Northern Virginia home. With a background in Information Technology and Computer Science, she teaches at Northern Virginia Community College, but her passion for education extends far beyond the classroom.
Taslim first learned about Mozaic through social media when she saw a call for volunteers to teach English, and she’s been part of the Mozaic family for almost two years now.
Reflecting on her experience, Taslim describes it as “very fulfilling and rewarding, a tiny drop in the realm to help.” Many of her students were Afghan and Palestinian refugees, and she recalls with pride how some of the women were holding a pen or paper for the first time in their lives.
“Some women, it was the first time ever that they were holding a pen or paper, some didn’t know how to read or write at all. But they had such a drive to learn and succeed in this new place, to make it home and capitalize on every opportunity they were given.”
Under Taslim’s guidance, students who once started from the alphabet are now reading books and writing full paragraphs. Their determination, curiosity, and passion continue to inspire her.
Taslim occasionally attends Mozaic events, often with her kids, and remains deeply connected to the community. She’s passionate about highlighting her students’ journeys, celebrating how far they’ve come despite the challenges they faced.
Her commitment reminds us that every small effort, every “tiny drop”, creates waves of change.
Recent Success Stories
For Zhulina Temori, education has always been a dream worth pursuing, not just for herself, but for her family. A devoted mother of five, Zhulina has spent the past few years supporting her children’s learning through Mozaic’s youth programs. This fall, she took a remarkable step forward of her own: beginning classes at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA).
Her journey is one of perseverance and hope. When Zhulina decided to apply to NOVA, she needed to pass an English placement exam, a challenge she met with the help of one of Mozaic’s dedicated volunteer tutors. Through consistent effort and encouragement, she strengthened her English skills and gained the confidence she needed to begin her college studies.

Partnerships
George Washington University : Preserving Heritage Through Textiles: Collaboration with Dr. Nabila Hijazi and GW Students
Mozaic was honored to collaborate with Dr. Nabila Hijazi and her students from George Washington University in a meaningful exploration of Syrian textile traditions. The class project, developed in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and presented with the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center, culminated in a micro exhibition highlighting the artistry and resilience of Syrian refugees.
During the program, Dr. Hijazi shared how her students studied textiles from the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Collection and connected with Syrian refugee women in the Washington, D.C. area to learn about traditional materials, techniques, and motifs. Through these exchanges, students gained deeper insight into how textile traditions preserve cultural identity in diaspora. Dr. Hijazi also highlighted Mozaic’s efforts in sustaining and empowering local sewing artisans—underscoring how preserving craft is both an act of memory and a pathway to community resilience.
Global Food Institute
Mozaic Kitchen is thrilled to partner with George Washington University and the Global Food Institute for a special demo cooking class with the course “Feeding Hope: Writing Food and Refugee Agency in the DC Community.”
Our beloved Damascinos chefs showcased the art of Syrian cuisine, preparing two exquisite kinds of Kibbeh and a comforting Lentil Soup, sharing not just flavors, but the stories of resilience and home behind every dish
This collaboration celebrates the power of food to build bridges, preserve culture, and inspire change, from the heart of Damascus to the classrooms of DC.
Loudoun Islamic Center
Mozaic partnered with the Loudoun Islamic Center to distribute food packs to 25 beneficiaries, providing essential grocery items such as cooking oil, canned vegetables, lentils, rice, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, and more. The initiative aimed to bring relief to families facing economic challenges and ensure access to nutritious food staples.
At a time when many families are struggling with food insecurity and uncertainty around SNAP benefits, this collaboration served as a timely reminder of the power of community care and solidarity. Together, Mozaic and the Leesburg Islamic Center continue to uphold the shared value of compassion by ensuring that no family is left behind.
NOVA Friends of Refugees: Fall is for Friends Festival
Our friends at NOVA Friends of Refugees invited Mozaic to take part in their Fall is for Friends Festival, a beautiful celebration of community and togetherness. We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect, collaborate, and celebrate friendship and resilience with our extended community.
