Mozaic September 2025 Newsletter

A Message from our Executive Director

Dear Mozaic Family,

From the Executive Director

As September comes to a close, I find myself reflecting with deep gratitude on the many meaningful moments we shared this month. At Mozaic, our calendar was full — with programs, advocacy, and community gatherings that brought both joy and responsibility.

The spirit of the Mawlid of the Prophet ﷺ reminded us of compassion, service, and light. Our immigration and advocacy efforts gave voice to the urgent needs of people of Syria, TPS holders, asylum seekers, and refugee families. We also kept space for mental health and wellness, recognizing how vital it is for families navigating uncertainty and change.

This month, we celebrated achievements, faced difficult news, and continued our mission with resilience and hope. In this newsletter, you will find highlights from Mozaic’s September programs and events, our advocacy work, updates on Syria and U.S. policies, community resources, and stories of impact.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your support — as volunteers, donors, partners, and friends — makes every achievement possible.

With gratitude,
Raghad Bushnaq
Executive Director, Mozaic

Program Highlights

Annual Womens Mawlid

On September 7th, our Annual Women’s Mawlid brought sisters together in love for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The evening was filled with reflection and remembrance as we sang beautiful nasheeds, gathered in halaqas, and reflected on the blessed life of the Prophet ﷺ. Thank you to all who joined us—your presence made the gathering truly special.

Kids Sira Workshop

On September 13th, our Annual Kids’ Sira Workshop invited children to learn timeless lessons from the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Through engaging activities and storytelling, kids explored the values of generosity, grit, courage, and honoring our parents. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and love for the Prophet ﷺ. Thank you to all the families who joined us—we look forward to continuing this journey of faith and character together!

Youth Sira Workshop

On September 14th, we hosted our very first Youth Sira Workshop—created especially for older kids. Together, we explored the same themes of generosity, grit, courage, and honoring our parents, but at a deeper and more advanced level that resonated with their growing experiences. Alhamdulillah, the youth loved it, and we hope to make this a cherished annual tradition, inshaAllah.

Immigration Film Festival

This September, Mozaic was honored to sponsor several films at the Immigration Film Festival, an event dedicated to amplifying immigrant and refugee voices through the power of storytelling. The festival brought together powerful narratives from around the world—highlighting journeys of struggle, resilience, and hope—and offered audiences the opportunity to reflect, connect, and stand in solidarity with immigrant communities. We are grateful to have been part of this celebration of art, justice, and humanity, and we thank the organizers, filmmakers, and attendees for making these stories shine.

Our Shared Home

On September 21st, we gathered at Kanoon Restaurant for Our Shared Home, a special dinner in honor of Welcoming America Week. The evening was filled with powerful stories from refugees in our own community—individuals and families Mozaic has had the honor of supporting—who shared their journeys and successes. It was a night of inspiration, connection, and celebration of resilience. Thank you to everyone who joined us in making our community a true shared home.

Recent Success Stories

Rehab Mustafa is a Palestinian woman who married a Syrian and is now the proud mother of three. About two years ago, she and her family moved to the United States to escape the war in Syria.
Adjusting to life in a new country was not easy. When they first arrived, one of her husband’s relatives took them in. Rehab remembers feeling lonely—having left everything behind and unable to speak the language.
Things began to change when she connected with Mozaic, thanks to the generous outreach of Mrs. Raghad. Through Mozaic, Rehab found a community of people with stories similar to her own. She enrolled in ESOL classes, determined to improve her English and build a new life here.
While her children attend classes at Mozaic, Rehab often spends time in the children’s library, reading every book she can and practicing English with her kids. Her dream is to one day become fluent enough in English to put her psychology degree to use and continue her professional journey in the U.S.

Recently, Rehab shared her story publicly at Our Shared Home, an event held in honor of Welcome Week that recognized and celebrated refugees. Her words inspired many and reminded us all of the resilience and hope within our community.

Partnerships & Advocacy

In partnership with the Syrian American Council, 100 Syrians visited their congressional representatives to advocate for the repeal of the Caesar Act. Mozaic’s CEO met with Virginia Senators and Representatives to emphasize the urgent need to lift sanctions so refugees can rebuild their destroyed homes and safely return to Syria. The visit included a one-hour meeting and luncheon with Senator Joe Wilson, where participants heard updates about his August visit to Syria and discussed pathways for reconstruction and refugee return.

Mozaic partners with We Are All America to elevate the voices of refugees, TPS holders, and asylum seekers in the DMV region. During National Advocacy Week, our team met with U.S. Senators and their staff to present urgent community priorities — including TPS extensions, resolving asylum backlogs, and ensuring timely work permit renewals. Through this collaboration, we helped bring the real stories and challenges of displaced families directly to policymakers, advocating for policies that promote stability, dignity, and opportunity for all.
