The Mozaic Digest

This digest brings you the latest breaking news on U.S. and international policies affecting Syria and refugee populations, offering clear updates on the decisions shaping our community.

U.S. Travel Restrictions Expanded (Effective Jan 1, 2026)

At the start of January, a new presidential travel restriction took effect that significantly expanded the number of countries whose nationals face entry limits into the United States. Under the updated policy, citizens of certain countries — including Syria — are subject to full or partial suspension of immigrant and some nonimmigrant visas unless they already held valid visas before January 1, 2026. The policy outlines specific categories of suspension and exceptions.

Pause on Immigrant Visa Issuance for 75 Countries (Effective Jan 21, 2026)

On January 21, the U.S. State Department implemented a pause on issuing immigrant visas (green card visas) for nationals of 75 countries as part of broader federal immigration policy changes. During this pause:
  • Immigrant visa interviews may continue, but no immigrant visas will be issued at U.S. consulates for those countries.
  • The pause does not apply to nonimmigrant visas like student (F‑1), work (H‑1B), or visitor (B‑1/B‑2) visas.
  • Existing valid immigrant visas are not revoked under this action.

USCIS Expansion of Adjudication Holds (Jan 1, 2026)

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) expanded its adjudication “pause” for certain pending applications to cover nationals of 39 countries, aligning with the updated travel restriction policy that went into effect January 1. Under this guidance:
  • Pending immigration benefit applications (such as adjustment of status or work authorization) can be held or delayed while USCIS conducts further review.
  • The expanded list includes additional countries beyond earlier versions of the policy.
  • Individuals already inside the U.S. with valid status or visas are not automatically stripped of status due to the pause, though pending cases may face delays.

Volunteer of the Month

Mays Kalo

For Mays Kalo, the journey to the United States began 13 years ago in Homs, Syria—carrying big dreams alongside uncertainty and challenge. Today, she calls Virginia home, where she lives with her husband and three children, deeply grateful for the path that led her here. Through perseverance and determination, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Information Systems and an MBA in Washington, D.C.. Now, this mother of three works as a Contract Manager supporting both government and commercial projects.
Her relationship with Mozaic began in 2017, and what started as volunteering quickly became one of the most meaningful parts of her life. Over the years, she has supported a wide range of Mozaic initiatives, including sira workshops, Syria-focused programming, women’s events, and numerous community efforts. Each experience has reinforced her belief in the strength, resilience, and potential of the refugee community.
Volunteering with Mozaic is deeply personal. As an asylee herself, she understands firsthand the challenges, uncertainty, and emotional weight that come with rebuilding a life in a new country. Her own journey was not easy, and being able to support others walking a similar path has given her story greater purpose.
“I know what it feels like to start over with very little and a lot of hope,” she shares. “Being where I am today was not easy, and giving back through Mosaic allows me to support others, honor my journey, and remind refugees that they are not alone.”
Mays’ commitment to Mozaic is rooted in both lived experience and deep gratitude.
“Mozaic represents hope, dignity, and opportunity. Giving back through this mission has been both healing and fulfilling, and I am proud to stand alongside an organization and community that continues to uplift and transform lives every day.”
Her story is a powerful reminder of how resilience, service, and compassion come together to create lasting impact. Thank you Mays for your unwavering support to Mozaic!

Story of the Month

Tareq Rabee

For Tareq Rabee, the journey from Syria to the cockpit has been defined by determination, discipline, and an unwavering belief in his dreams. Now 20 years old, Tareq is pursuing his passion for aviation through flight school, steadily building the skills and experience needed to shape his future in the skies.
From a young age, Tareq has been driven by curiosity and a love for learning. Alongside his studies, he finds balance and joy in playing soccer, gaming, and—most of all—flying planes. Aviation is more than an interest; it is a calling that reflects his responsible nature and commitment to constant self-improvement. Each flight represents not just progress toward a career, but another step in a journey he is deeply proud of.
Today, Tareq has already achieved an important milestone: becoming a commercial pilot. This accomplishment stands as a testament to his hard work and perseverance, especially considering how far he has come since the beginning of his journey. Rather than slowing down, he remains focused on what lies ahead.
Looking to the future, Tareq’s goals are clear and ambitious. He plans to earn all of his additional ratings and licenses, complete his education, and become a flight instructor—allowing him to gain experience, build flight hours, and mentor others who share his passion. Ultimately, his dream is to fly for an airline, turning years of dedication into a lifelong career.
Tareq’s story is one of growth, resilience, and aspiration. It reflects the power of commitment and the belief that with hard work and focus, even the highest goals are within reach.
